When we are young, our skin renews itself very effectively. Skin cells are naturally regenerated every 21 to 28 days. As we age, skin cell turnover slows to only every 40+ days which results in dull, tired-looking skin. Chemical exfoliation in the form of peels dissolves dead, flaky skin cells, promoting collagen production and greater elasticity in new cells. Chemical peels are a category of advanced clinical skin treatments that reverse the effects of damaged skin due to aging, sun exposure and acne. By sloughing off the dead skin cells with a chemical peel, a new glowing layer of skin is exposed making your skin appear younger and tighter.
Who are candidates for chemical peels?
Patients who have facial blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, acne, and uneven skin pigmentation are candidates. Optimal results are achieved with a series of treatments.
Are chemical peels safe?
Chemical peels are normally safe procedures when performed by a qualified, experienced physician. Each treatment has different side effects. Some patients may experience irritation, flaking and soreness while others experience stinging, redness, irritation and crusting after a chemical peel. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for several days or weeks depending on the strength of peel used. It is important to protect your newly formed skin. Using sunscreen daily is an important follow-up practice.
Who should avoid chemical peels?
Patients with sensitive skin may be at a greater risk for post-treatment complications. Patients currently taking antibiotics, have active cold sores, are pregnant, or trying to become pregnant should not consider peels. Dr. Luz should be made aware of any allergies, as some allergies are contraindicated to chemical peels.
Are chemical peels painful?
This is dependent on how deep the peel is. Light or superficial peels tend to be painless but can be uncomfortable, and you may experience a slight stinging sensation. Medium peels tend to be more uncomfortable, and you may experience increased stinging sensation for a few minutes until the peel is neutralized.
Which chemical peel treatments do you offer?
There are several types of chemical peels available at Fountain of Youth MD. Each is unique and most effective in treating a particular condition. Chemical peels can be superficial or deep, depending on concentrations and the level of treatment intensity. Choosing the correct chemical peel is very important. After discussing your needs and preferences, Dr. Luz will analyze your skin to find the best match for you.
- Jessner Peel Named after the German born Dermatologist Dr.Max Jessner, this is a light cosmetic peel that is suitable for all skin types. The Jessner Peel is a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol that offers a deep penetration to thoroughly exfoliate the outer layers of skin. This peel stimulates the deeper dermis level of the skin and causes new fibroblasts and collagen to develop, reducing fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging. It is also used to treat sun damaged skin, hyperpigmentation, and contributes to the healing of acne.
- TCA Peel TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is used in a range of concentrations depending on how deep of a peel is required. This peel is used to remove damaged upper layers of the skin. It is a very effective treatment for aging skin as it can eliminate superficial wrinkles, improve overall skin texture, and reduce hyperpigmentation.
- VI Peel The VI Peel is a breakthrough in facial rejuvenation and chemical peels. The VI Peel contains a synergistic blend of powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types. This peel provides dramatic results with virtually no pain, no skin preparation and little downtime. Deep peels of the past, without exception, epitomize the “no pain, no gain” approach to skin care. VI Peels are virtually painless, yet produce dramatic visible results in just days. Why wait weeks or months for results? Enjoy beautiful, younger looking skin in about a week with the VI Peel.
- Prestige Peel The Prestige Depth Peel from Visao MD™ offers a quick, comfortable, and predictable comprehensive skin rejuvenation solution for all skin types. Prestige Peel is for those seeking more dramatic results that go far beyond what can be achieved with superficial peels. The result is more youthful skin with improved tone and texture combined with a minimal amount of “down time”.
The SkinPen by Bellus Medical is a medical grade, state of the art precision micro-needling tool available through Fountain of Youth MD. It stimulates your skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen formation creating healthier skin. The repair process of your skin is accelerated by SkinPen through the creation of microscopic channels, which allow products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin resulting in better product outcomes.
What are the benefits of SkinPen?
There are numerous benefits received through use of the SkinPen due to new collagen production reversing years of sun damage. It is designed to address acne scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, large pores, fine lines and wrinkles. It improves overall tone and texture, brightens and tightens skin, with little or virtually no down time.
Who is a candidate for SkinPen Microneedling?
One of the most exciting things about the SkinPen is that it can be used on all types of skin. However, the treatment is not recommended for pregnant women, patients with a history of keloid scars, scleroderma, collagen vascular disease, or cardiac abnormalities, a hemorrhagic disorder or hemostatic dysfunction, active cold sores, or bacterial or fungal infection.
What areas of the body can be treated with SkinPen?
The SkinPen is very versatile and can be used on all parts of the body, face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back. This makes it especially helpful in addressing acne scars on the back and stretch marks on the body.
What can I expect during a SkinPen treatment?
The unique design of the SkinPen allows for individualized settings, which makes the treatment comfortable for most patients. The SkinPen works by using a sterile and disposable cartridge containing 12 micro-needles that are attached to the tip of the SkinPen. A thin layer of topical serum is applied to your skin and the appropriate micro-channeling treatment depth is selected for your unique type of skin. Next, in a gentle motion the pen is glided across the targeted repair areas. The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated as well as the severity of skin damage.
What can I expect following a SkinPen procedure?
Immediately following the treatment you will notice some slight redness/pinkness (like a mild sunburn). Dr. Luz will recommend product protocols to aide with your skin’s natural healing process. The total healing time depends on the treatment and the depth of repair process required. On average, patients’ skin appears pink for 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours.
When will I see the results of SkinPen?
Many patients notice healthier looking skin immediately, and the natural repair process continues to progress over the course of several weeks. Because true dermal collagen remodeling takes place over time, it may take up to 3-6 months following your last treatment session to see your final results.
How many SkinPen treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will be determined based upon your individual treatment goals and the health of your skin. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals.
Wrinkle smoothing injectables
Repeated facial movements etch lines into the skin, similar to paper that has been folded over and over. When we are young, the skin bounces back into place. As collagen and elastin decline over time, the lines remain and become deeper. Modern anti-aging treatments like wrinkle injections were developed to minimize the amount of facial muscle movement, thereby preventing wrinkle formation for skin that looks youthful and refreshed.
Botox® and Xeomin®
Neuromodulators like Botox and Xeomin are injected into specific facial muscles to improve the look of facial lines and wrinkles. They work by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, which allows facial muscles that have been injected to relax; thereby, smoothing out lines that have formed. Botox is a highly purified protein from a family of naturally occurring muscle-relaxing compounds. In the 1990s, Botox was being used across the country for cosmetic applications, and was finally FDA approved for aesthetic use in 2002. Recently, Xeomin joined the market as the newest competitor to Botox Cosmetic in the U.S. Xeomin has been successfully used in Europe and the Americas for over 15 years. Like Botox, Xeomin is injected at the site of wrinkles to smooth and soften lines caused by excessive action of these muscles. The result is a face that looks fresher and younger.
What can I expect during and after a Botox or Xeomin treatment?
A simple, nonsurgical, 15-minute treatment consists of a few tiny injections that will smooth moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Botox and Xeomin are both incredibly safe products that have excellent results. As with any medical treatment, side effects are possible. Most common are temporary redness and mild swelling at the injection site, which generally disappear in 30-60 minutes after treatment. Other occasional side effects are bruising, headache, or sensation of facial heaviness. More rare side effects are possible and will be discussed in depth prior to treatment. Results become noticeable in 7-10 days and typically last 3 to 4 months.
Dermal fillers: Belotero®, Juvederm®, Radiesse®
As we get older, our skin begins to change and show signs of the aging process in the form of wrinkles. Lines deepen between the mouth and nose, lips thin, and cheeks become hollow. These changes are the result of a loss of support beneath the skin including that of elastic tissue, collagen and, surprisingly, fat! In the past, major surgery was the only effective way to treat volume loss, but today’s approach uses dermal fillers as a safe, non-surgical way to restore lost volume and youthful facial contours. Most dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance made from sugar molecules and found naturally in our bodies. Some dermal fillers like Radiesse are made of tiny calcium-based microspheres suspended in water-based gel. The calcium microspheres are similar to minerals found naturally in the body so allergy testing is not required. Over time, the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid, microspheres, and gel, leaving behind only natural collagen. Results can last between 6 and 12 months as the product is slowly broken down and absorbed by the body. Dermal fillers are injected under the skin using a fine needle. Commonly treated areas include lips, cheeks, and the lines between the nose and mouth. At Fountain of Youth MD, we can pre-treat areas to be injected with local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort, and some of the fillers we use also contain lidocaine, which makes injections virtually painless. Side effects can vary from patient to patient and may include mild swelling and occasionally bruising which generally subside within a few days. The effects from dermal filler injections are immediate and impressive. Improvements resemble a facelift, but without an unnatural “pulled” appearance that surgical facelifts can sometimes cause, which is why you will sometimes hear dermal filler treatments referred to as a “liquid facelift.”
Exilis Elite skin tightenting
You have probably heard about freezing your fat off with Coolsculpting® by Zeltiq®, but you may not have heard of heating fat and tightening your skin with Exilis technology. Exilis’ monopolar radiofrequency and advanced cooling system allows for deep penetration within the fat cells without the risk of burning your skin. This innovative technology is non-invasive and safe for all skin types. Patients will see improvement after just one treatment session, although we suggest a package of four treatments spaced a couple of weeks apart to produce maximum results. While there is no downtime associated with Exilis treatment, it is recommended that patients maintain, if not increase, their physical activity following each session. By engaging in exercise and continuing to remain hydrated after Exilis, skin tightening patients ensure that their metabolic exchange remains high: speeding the reduction of fat volume and skin laxity.
How does Exilis work?
Patients are often skeptical of non-invasive skin treatments, which is why it is important for us to explain the science behind it. It is important to note that Exilis is FDA cleared for improving skin laxity and the appearance of wrinkles. A majority of Exilis patients also report a reduction in fat volume. Fat deposits form due to metabolically inactive cells. The heat emitted by the Exilis device causes the targeted fat cells to breakdown (a process called lipolysis) and disperse. The thermal energy also boosts the body’s natural ability to produce collagen; not only will your fat cell volume decrease, but your skin will tighten and become younger-looking.
About the Exilis Equipment: What makes it so different?
The biggest advantage of the Exilis equipment is its safety. Previous fat reduction technologies worked similarly, but they were unable to penetrate deep enough without harming the skin. Exilis comes equipped with DTC (Dermal Temperature Control) and EFC (Energy Flow Control). The DTC system is the feature that ensures the patient’s skin is left unharmed. It even keeps track of the skin’s temperature and allows us to adjust the machine’s temperature accordingly.
What parts of the body can be treated with Exilis?
Exilis’ built-in cooling device makes it safe for reducing sagging skin and excess fat anywhere on the body, including the face. Areas that can be treated include the face and around eyes, neck, jowls, abdomen, arms, thighs, buttocks, love handles, and fat rolls on the back.
Are multiple Exilis treatment sessions necessary?
Exilis™ treatments are recommended in packages of 4 to 6 treatments to achieve the best outcome. Each treatment is a quick 30- to 45-minute visit, scheduled 7-14 days apart, and there is no downtime following the procedure.
How long will it take to recover from Exilis treatment?
Exilis patients are usually back to their regular activities right after treatment. The procedure is pain-free, but we do suggest drinking lots of water before and after the treatment to avoid dehydration.
What can I expect during and after an Exilis treatment?
During an Exilis treatment, patients report a warm sensation, but the cooling device prevents most discomfort and makes Exilis safe for all skin types. Exilis results are long lasting and though you may see immediate results, maximum results are experienced incrementally over 3 to 6 months following the last treatment.
